CHAPTER NINE

JUST AS IT HAD IN HER DREAM, Anne’s hand reached up to touch Chase as if it had a mind of its own.

But this wasn’t a dream. And there wasn’t even a wisp of mist for him to vanish into. The night was clear, the sky overfilled with stars, her yard awash with moonlight.

He stood motionless while she traced his jaw with her fingertips. Then, just as she was asking herself what on earth had possessed her, he cupped her chin with his hand and leaned closer.

Her heart quickened at his touch. She held her breath as he softly kissed her forehead, her nose, each corner of her mouth. Then his lips met hers and her heart began to race.

His mouth felt as perfect as she’d imagined it would. Warm and gentle, yet decidedly masculine. His scent reminded her of a sultry ocean breeze on a hot Caribbean night, and he tasted of the cognac they’d had while waiting for Rachel and Julie to arrive home. A darkly rich, slightly smoky taste.

The thought that she was at risk of getting drunk on his kiss skittered across her mind. Then he draped his arms around her waist—pulling her closer, deepening their kiss.

The feel of his hard, muscular body sent heat swirling through her. It settled between her legs, and suddenly there was nothing in the world except here and now, her and Chase.

She cradled the back of his neck with her hands, tangled his hair around her fingers and explored his mouth the same ravenous way he was exploring hers. The kiss started her blood pounding in her head, while sweet surges of need began melting her entire body.

His hands slid to her hips, fitting her to him more intimately. He was hard with wanting her; the fresh rush of desire that swept her made her wet with wanting him. Instinctively, she began moving against him, seeking relief from the throbbing ache inside her but only making it stronger—and making him groan.

“Oh, Anne,” he finally murmured, ending the kiss and looking down at her.

There was a question in his eyes. But as desperately as she wanted to answer it by inviting him inside, some tattered remnant of common sense warned her not to. So she simply rested her cheek against the solid warmth of his chest and stood in the circle of his embrace, her body heat mingling with his, the rapid beat of his heart synchronized with hers. It made her feel…

When she tried to call up the words, she discovered there weren’t any to express exactly how she felt. But it was as if she’d never before been truly kissed. And now that she had been her world was spinning crazily out of control.

“I wasn’t planning that,” he whispered against the top of her head.

“I started it,” she whispered back.

“So…it wasn’t a mistake, then.”

She didn’t know whether he was making a statement or asking a question. But his words stopped the world spinning and brought reality hurrying back—the reality that she might end up pointing the finger of guilt at his sister.
